Hotel Art?

 unnamed, H. Helgason, 10" x 8", oil on canvas

Based on the amount of authoritative responses to my original post, I am updating this post in its entirety, instead of just adding an update section to the post.
This is what I once thought was "Hotel Art", that is, art which was commissioned, or distributed, by a company that provided art to commercial institutions like hotels, motels, etc., perhaps copied from other works or maybe duplicated many times. A label on the back shows that the art was distributed by a company called Personal Preference Inc. (PPI) of Lisle, IL.
Actually, PPI was a company that worked directly with artists to offer their original works to customers at "house parties", using a paradigm similar to that used for Tupperware parties of the 1950s. PPI used Tupperware's direct marketing strategy in which individuals contracted with PPI to present their wares, original art, at a house party. All of these art pieces had a PPI label verso, that contained PPI's contact information, the name of the person who brought the artwork to the party, an inventory number and sometimes the name of the person who purchased the artwork. All of the artwork was framed using frames made in Mexico. PPI worked mainly with unknown or new artists. Subsequently, some of these artists became successful, and even well known.
I have other paintings, and a few collages, in my collection that were also distributed by Personal Preference Inc. of Lisle, IL, and all are quite well done.

Regarding the painting from my collection used as an example of PPI's wares, the artist has been identified as H. Helgason by a former PPI consultant who knew the artist, who was her mother's favorite artist. This may be the work of Hallgrimur Helgason, an Icelandic painter, writer, translator and columnist. There is a fairly lengthy Wikipedia entry for him and several YouTube videos featuring him. Helgason lived in Boston in 1985-6 and in New York in 1986-9 where he painted and exhibited and was apparently a starving artist with numerous occupations to support himself, so it does not seem implausible that PPI may have been one of them. He returned to New York, briefly, in 1995. Helgason later enjoyed, and enjoys, success as an artist, writer and poet. I am, though, still trying to confirm the identity of the artist who created this painting.

  1. You have me laughing. Let me tell you why. I have been looking for months trying to find the artist that painted two paintings my mom just gave me. Well I found him and I am waiting for an email back. The mystery name and number are....you ready....the name and order number of the person that brought the painting at a house party that sold paintings. OMG this is too funny. All these artist were new, and unknown. I have had my paints for 25 year. Current value? Around $200 bucks. Go on ebay and type in Personal Preference Art and 3 paintings will pop up. Have fun.

    1. Thanks so much for your posting and information. Is your mother the source for the information about the name and order number? Did she purchase the two paintings she gave to you at such a house party?

  2. I, too, have a painting with a gold seal and a serial number. As I am the original purchaser, I can guarantee you that the handwriting on the side of it shows the last name of the person who bought it on top. The number next to it is Personal Preference's ID number for the art piece. Below that is the name of the person who bought it/ the name of the person hosting the art party and the date of the art party. Mine is 24" x 30" (or close to that) signed Alan Lampert oil painting. Does anyone know where I can go online to find an approximate value?

  8. Hi - I picked up an personal preferences painting signed by G Gladwell. The gold and silver tag on the says Personal Preference Inc. Ohio St. with a tag # 30-180129 with 2 rows of names/#s. Row 1: Menich 122, Row 2: Brummel/Cop 12-4-88. Sounds like this means that the painting was ordered by Menich with an order # 122 and it was bought at a party given by Brummel on 12-4-1988. Is that correct? Also, it sounds like these are original paintings, is that correct or did they also do copies of known artist's works? So in this case, the artist would be G. Gladwell? I'm hoping it was painted by Guy Gladwell as opposed to being a copy of one of his works. Thanks for any comments.

  14. I also have a painting with a signature that I can only make out the first 4 letters as "Wood". Personal Preferences is no longer in business & I found the owner on Facebook & she lives in Arizona. My picture is a Native American pottery painting. No clue how to find out who it is & ive been looking everywhere! I emailed the owners sister & she told me the artist is "Arrietta". Can't find that person or does the signature resemble anything remotely close to that name! She's probably pulling my leg for bothering her. Lol

    1. Your artist may be George Arrietta http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1997-12-14/features/9712140383_1_paintings-personal-preference-sell

    2. As I read the article, it appears that Arrietta was an artist, but also ran a company that supplied thousands of paintings to Personal Preference every year:

"George Arrieta is an artist who has worked with Personal Preference for many years. His company, Arrieta Studio, based in Ft. Lauderdale, supplies about 10,000 paintings a year to the company."

  17. I have a lothograph on a canvas that I purchased myself so it has my last name, and the #220 next to it. 220 is the order number for the frame I selected. The name Park is signed/painted on, no artist name listed on the tags on the back of the frame. My frame was also made in Mexico, looks very will made.
I have no idea who Park is and cannot find the info anywhere online. I don't even have the name of the painting listed on my purchase order.
Anyone know who Park is? Painting is of an African American woman sitting on a piano bench looking down at the music. It's a beautiful painting.

  18. As a former consultant of Personal Perference Inc I can tell you these painting were sold as direct sales similar to Tupperware. They were not "hotel paintings" unless a consultant made a commercial sale. The artist seen above was H. Helgason. Met him at one of the PPI conventions as he was my mom's favorite artist. He re-autographed her favorite painting and took a photo with her. All PPI frames were made in Mexico.

    1. Hi Jeff, I sent you an email. The names on the sticker are not the artists' names, they are the names of the person who hosted the "art party" and the person who bought the piece of art. As noted above, PPI, had parties, similar to "Tupperware Parties", where party hosts presented art for sale to party attendees.

  32. Been searching for info on a C. Carson painting, PIP # 81-096281. It's a maritime setting of a young boy gazing out at couple tall ships out in the distant with a ghostly old salty mariner looking down from the clouds. Any info that could point me in the right direction as to the worth of these classic scenes by C. Carson would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

  33. recently purchased a H. Hargrove - that has a PPI label. Did PPI sell serigraphs as well as oil paintings?

    ReplyDelete

    1. PPI sold a variety of mediums of art, oils, prints, collages, etc. I have not seen any serigraphs, however, but that does not mean they didn't sell any. I am not sure of the technique used to produce H. Hargrove artwork. They are some kind of print, though. I have not seen any PPI watercolors....

  35. I checked my files and find several newspaper articles about PPI and Jan Madori Ferrin, but no notes on my conversation, which may have been with Ms. Ferrin. I just don't recall the substance of the conversation. I typically take notes in situations like this, so there may still be a file somewhere on my computer. 2007 is the last reference I find to PPI while it was still operating.

  36. One last question - since all the items PPI sold had serial numbers - is there a database or etc of these numbers that might have descriptions of the items?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Apparently not. If there ever was one, it was lost when the business closed.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Very little information about the business and artists has survived. Some of the most valuable information comes from artists and folks who worked with PPI, though that is meager, at this point. Luckily, it was not that long ago that PPI was active, so we still encounter folks with new information to contribute.

  42. Wow. This is interesting! I bought a pair of paintings at a yard sale today with the PPI label. The artist is H Gailey and looking online he seems to be well-known for seascapes. These are both country scenes and I love the use of light. They were in the “Mexico” frames and quite faded except the edges protected by the frames.

  43. I also have a painting that was inside a storage unit I purchased about 10 years ago gold sticker PPI 634717. No signature on the back but the oil painting is signed V.Bervtne it is of a night scene people walking towards  "Arc De Triomphe". I'd truly love to know it's value it's been on my wall for years now.
